Warning: This Review Contains Spoilers

'Smoking Took Me Over: How Cigarettes Hooked Me and I Can't Quit' (Anon.) - A Review

Part One - The Author

The true author of the story is unknown, it may have been the creator of the 'Women's Stories' YouTube channel, but equally given that one of the other stories posted on the channel(1) was stolen from the Noble Leaf Library it's possible that this story was stolen from another as yet unidentified source.(2) A further possibility is that the story was generated algorithmically using a large-language model. As of the time of this review, no evidence has been uncovered to clarify this point.

Part Two - 'Smoking Took Me Over: How Cigarettes Hooked Me and I Can't Quit'

The story was released in audio form onto YouTube on March, 1, 2025. The plot is about Lauren who had been trying to get her mother to quit for a very long time without any success. Perhaps new tactics would win the day.

Part Three - Comments

The story begins, as the other two I've reviewed, with a clear statement of setting, in this case Tucson, Arizona during a long hot summer.(3) The narrator, Lauren, states her age as 15 going on 16 when the events of the story took place.

The only other named character in the story is her mother, Diane(4) who's habit is quantified as two packs-a-day.

Beyond this the only other character in the story is the unnamed service station clerk who sells the narrator cigarettes and who clearly has the smoking fetish in some form.

What makes this one stand out is that the basic plot is the one Keith used in 'Let's Make A Deal'(5), although what happens in this story more closely resembles the as yet unidentified Readers Digest story that Keith said inspired his story. Laurens character arc therefore is very similar to that of Lisa in 'Let's Make A Deal' with the addition of a couple of failed attempts to quit. The reaction/actions of Lauren's mother also broadly conforms to the one depicted for the parents in Keith's story.(6)

As with 'Smoke In My Hands' this story suffers from an overly tight focus on the narrator and her home life, there's little mention of the narrators life outside the events described in the story so we never get to see the reaction of the narrators school(7) friends to what she's doing.

By stories end, the narrator is implied to have switched to her mothers brand and is clearly a devoted smoker. The ending sentence is resigned rather than despairing.(8) Of interest is the narrator seems to be describing a realistic progression, but without what I'd class as a clear timeline.

As with the previous two stories I've reviewed this tale is probably of more use to authors looking for ideas, than for the general reader. I give it a soft recommendation for general readers, a stronger one for authors.

Notes:
1. 'The Six Weeks' by Stu Bash, the story can be found in Vol. 6 of the Noble Leaf Library, a review by G_T, can be found in Vol. 16 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
2. In the appendix to my review of 'Smoke In My Hands: How Cigarettes Got Me' I speculated that the other first person stories on the 'Women's Stories' YouTube channel may have been based off Anti-Smoking testimonials.
3. Both 'Smoke In My Hands: How Cigarettes Got Me', set in Missoula, Montana and 'The Smoke I Couldn’t Escape: A Summer of Cigarettes', set in Ashville, North Carolina, are set in the summer months.
4. This is also the name of the mother in 'The Smoke I Couldn’t Escape: A Summer of Cigarettes'.
5. This story can be found in Vol. 1 of the 'Treasury of Keith' part of the Noble Leaf Library. A review of the story can be found in Vol. 8 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review
6. After calling the narrators initial bluff, she strings things along hoping that Milady Nicotine will work her magic on her daughter.
7. At two point's the narrator mentions her school, in the first that some girls there smoked Marlboro Light 100's (Her mother smokes Marlboro 100s). In the second mention she says she smokes before school but does not elaborate on what happens within.
8. "I'd lost, and I wasn't even mad. Just stuck."
