'Smoke Won Me Over: How Cigarettes Seduced and Addicted Me' (Anon.) - A Review

Part One - The Author

The true author of the story is unknown, it may have been the creator of the 'Women's Stories' YouTube channel, but equally given that one of the other stories posted on the channel(1) was stolen from the Noble Leaf Library it's possible that this story was stolen from another as yet unidentified source.(2) A further possibility is that the story was generated algorithmically using a large-language model. As of the time of this review, no evidence has been uncovered to clarify this point.

Part Two - 'Smoke Won Me Over: How Cigarettes Seduced and Addicted Me'

The story was released to YouTube in audio form on March 6, 2025. For Clara a chance encounter in a bar leads to a new relationship and other changes.

Part Three - 'Smoke Won Me Over: How Cigarettes Seduced and Addicted Me'

As with the other stories in this set, there's a clear description of location, Portland, Oregon and the season, winter(3). The narrator, Clara who is 21 describes the initial events as taking place two years previously. In the opening narration before she describes her meeting with Lena the narrator reveals they have the smoking fetish at the 'smoking is interesting' level.(4)

Lena, the other major character in the story states she's from Eugene, Oregon and attending college, presumably the same one the narrator is attending. She smokes Marlboro Reds at a rate of between 2 to 3 packs-a-day. Two other characters, Mia and Johanna, both friends of Clara are mentioned but left undetailed.

The opening of the story follows a typical 'love at first sight' formula. Once Clara and Lena have moved in together, the story follows broadly the same formula as the other first person stories, although it does expose an interesting motivation for starting, having been stimulated by watching Lena smoke Clara starts wondering what smoking herself might be like. The last sentence is despairing.(5)

This bipartite structure results in a tonal shift between the smokey romance of the beginning and the 'how do I get out of this?' panic of the conclusion. The story also differs from the other first person stories on the channel in that there are frequent references to sex, but thankfully not overly detailed descriptions. This may be tied to what follows the story.

I can definitely state that this part of the story is worth reading and unpacking for inspiration.

Appendix: The Advert

Once the story concludes the narrator starts up again with the lines "Hey, thanks for hanging out with me through that story. You know, spilling how I got tangled up with smoking, how Lena lit that spark and now I can't break free." this is the start of a high pressure advert for a dubious male sexual enhancement drug with the promise that the purchase link is in the comments.(6)(7) The advert is tightly tied to the story with the narrator making references to it during the course of the advert including repeating the possible title of the story as part of the final push to get the listener to 'click that link fast'.

This raises questions about the origins of the other first person narrative stories, were these originally linked to similar adverts and then decoupled from them? Until the originals are tracked down it's impossible to know, nevertheless it's another piece of information that might be useful in tracking them down.

However the advert itself is not worth listening to.(8)

However the remaining first person stories and the pirated version of 'The Six Weeks' do not have any special links in their comments.
