Part One - The Author
The author is apparently active on Reddit.
Part Two - Brianna's Sleepless Nights
The story was first published on Reddit and subsequently republished in Vol. 122 of the Noble Leaf Library. For Brianna, the doctors prescription offered the chance of a good night's sleep. But what to do when you can't renew the script.
Part Three - Comments
As with 'A Lesser Evil'(1), the author again explored a non-standard way of embracing the habit. The protagonist sees a doctor for persistent insomnia and is prescribed nicotine patches. When the script runs out and the doctor is not available the protagonist realizing that 'Milady Nicotine' has worked her magic turns to smoking to get what she needs.
The problem with this story lies with the doctor, not so much in what he prescribes, but in the fact that he disappears from the story. In the story's second act it's stated that he's dealing with a 'family issue' and will return in a couple of days. In effect the doctor disappears from the story from this point, however given the nature of the treatment discussed in the opening section it's reasonable to expect that there would be some kind of follow up, to not even mention this is a mistake akin to the one made in the incomplete story 'Naomi' by Marcus(2) where that author mentioned that a character was entering a competition but didn't mention the outcome. It's also akin to the mistake that AZ-Man made in 'The Elusive California Dream' where an important character disappears from the story and whose fate is left unresolved at stories end.(3)
It is for the reason above, that while liking the authors willingness to try and expand on the reasons someone might embrace the habit, I cannot really recommend this. As I have stated many times before it's a case where a good idea has not been exploited to it's fullest extent.
