Gretchen's Red Jaguar and Velvet Dreams (HagenMrk) - A Review

Part One - The Author

HagenMrk is a veteran smoking fetish fiction author who's in addition runs a 'sightings blog' that this reviewer is surprised has not been used as a source of inspiration by other writers. He has created several series of smoking fetish stories.(1)

Part Two - Gretchen's Red Jaguar and Velvet Dreams

The story which is the twelfth story in the Gretchen Series was as far as I know first published in Vol. 135 of the Noble Leaf Library and republished in 'The Gretchen Chronicles'. Kilee had long lived in her cousin Kaitlyn's shadow. Now she had a chance to stand out herself, would she be allowed to.

Part Three - Comments

The author opens the story with the various characters going through old photographs, this serves both as a subtle recap of the preceding volumes of the series and a way to explore the characters by how they react to them. The key photograph is one clearly taken after the events of 'Gretchen Takes On The School Board'(2). Kaitlyn's glee and Gretchen's teasing remark about 'starting too young' is contrasted with Kilee's embarrassment, Braden, Kaitlyn's younger brothers horror and Tina, Kilee's mothers shame over what happened.

This sets up the stories 'A' and 'B' plots, with the 'A' plot being driven that Kilee's realisation that she's always followed in Kaitlyns wake and when the opportunity comes to have something that is her own she grabs it with both hands. For Katilyn that opportunity puts unexpected tension into her relationship with Kilee, intellectually she understands she needs to let Kilee have this, but cannot stop herself from making things worse, leading to desperate actions to save not only her friendship with Kilee, but the relationship Kilee has entered into.

The 'B' plot surrounding Brayden is the climax of a thread that started in 'Gretchen’s Sister Ties The Knot'(3) which confirmed the characters anti-smoking streak at an age of 4. This story shows that things have progressed further and paint a very ugly picture of Brayden's possible future(4). Gretchen's attempt to bridge the gap revealed founders on mutual incomprehension and results only in a grudging truce.

While this is a very good story, there is a missed opportunity to follow up on the events of 'Gretchen’s Sister Ties The Knot'. One of the subplots involves a character named Isabel, she's the niece of Tina's husband Mitch and a smoker. She talks with Kaitlyn and Kilee and in addition to starting a friendship with them, is persuaded by Kaitlyn to try a Marlboro Red 100 instead of her current preference Marlboro Ultra Light 100's. The upshot of which was that she might consider switching to the stronger cigarette. That was three years ago story time and it would have been nice to see how that relationship had progressed and how her habit had evolved since then.

Over all this is a strong entry in a series that has evolved from unpromising beginnings(5) into a veritable smoking fetish family saga. I've no problems in recommending this as an individual story, but strongly recommend that the preceding stories be read if the readers wishes to get a fuller understanding of the characters and their relationships.

1. The authors major series of stories are the: Trevor Series (20 stories), Gretchen Series (13 stories) and Breanna Series (7 Stories)
2. The story can be found in 'The Gretchen Chronicles' part of the Noble Leaf Library. The key plot event in that story is that Kaitlyn had started smoking at age 9 and persuaded Kilee to start shortly after she did leading to a clash with the school board.

4. The revelation from his teacher that Brayden wants to control not only his own family, but the entire world to ensure his personal comfort leads to some very uncomfortable conclusions about what he might do further down the road in the series should it get to that point, it also suggests that he'd die a very lonely man.
5. The first story in the series is 'The Teenage Girl Smokers Convention' which can be found in 'The Gretchen Chronicles'. A review written by an unnamed reviewer can be found in Vol. 27 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
