'How I Fell For Marlboro Red - My Unapologetic Smoking Addiction' (Anon.) - A Review

Part One - The Author

The true author of the story is unknown, it may have been the creator of the 'Women's Stories' YouTube channel, but equally given that one of the other stories posted on the channel(1) was stolen from the Noble Leaf Library it's possible that this story was stolen from another as yet unidentified source.(2) A further possibility is that the story was generated algorithmically using a large-language model. As of the time of this review, no evidence has been uncovered to clarify this point.

Part Two - 'How I Fell For Marlboro Red - My Unapologetic Smoking Addiction'

The story was released to YouTube in audio form on February 28, 2025. The unnamed narrator describes how an impulsive decision led to them becoming a proud and open smoker.

Part Three - Comments

The story opens with what may have been the stories actual title.(3) Unlike any of the other first person stories that followed it the story is broken up into chapters and has a positive ending with the narrator becoming a well adjusted and proud smoker as can be seen by her last words.(4) Like the later stories there is a clear description of setting, Sao Paolo, Brazil in the summer.(5) The unnamed narrator is 19 at stories start and 25 years old when it finishes. This extended time frame allows for a realistic progression from 'experimenting' to 'devoted'.

It has two major flaws, firstly the narrator and her parents are unnamed. The neighbour who's example inspires the narrator and one of the narrators college friends are the only characters named.(6) Secondly and in my view fatally the fact that the narrators parents are also smokers is not mentioned until the stories penultimate chapter. This single fact completely changes the dynamics of the story at a late stage and is something that should have been mentioned right at the start.

This one is recommended only as a source for ideas and as an example of what not to do.

2. In the appendix to my review of 'Smoke In My Hands: How Cigarettes Got Me' I speculated that the other first person stories on the 'Women's Stories' YouTube channel may have been based off Anti-Smoking testimonials.

5. This is the only one of the first person stories not set in the United States.
6. The neighbours name is given as 'Isiu Xiaoao' in the subtitling the first time they are mentioned, the second time they are mentioned the name is given as 'Esiu Joow'. The college friends name is given as 'Bia'.
