Anne's Choice 2 (Richard) - A Review

Part One - The Author

Richard was a smoking fetish author who as far as can be known wrote two stories, both featuring the same characters.(1) From what I can rembember both stories were first posted to Vesperae Lux's now defunct bulletin board, the first made it to Loring's website, appearing there in February of 2006 and ultimately both were republished as part of the Noble Leaf Library appearing in Volumes 31 and 43.

Part Two - Anne's Choice 2

Ten years after the event's of 'Anne's Choice', Martin runs into Anne again, something that sets in motion a chain of events that leads Martin to a choice that will have profound effects on his future.

Part Three - Comments

Really this story should have been entitled 'Martin's Choice' as he is the focal character in this tale, just as Anne was in the previous. As noted in the summary above there's a ten year gap in story time between the two parts of the series. The author does a reasonably good job of covering just what was happening between the first and second stories however one detail is left unresolved. Anne reveals that she was in a relationship with a smoker named Phil, this relationship ended due to the stress of Anne loosing her unborn child and Anne's subsequent resumption of the habit after both had quit during the pregnancy. It's never made clear if Phil was the man she met at the end of 'Anne's Choice' or someone else.

Of interest is a piece of dialog between Anne and Martin late in the novel where Anne states that it's not her Martin wants to have a relationship with but "...the fantasy woman smoker you’ve been dreaming about all these years." This relationship between fantasy and reality is the issue that AZ-Man confronts in three of his stories(2) and SStoryman features in 'Worth Sacrificing For'(3)

But what is of most interest is another aspect of the plot, Anne manages to convince Martin to try smoking. At stories conclusion Martin is faced with the same choice Anne had in the previous story, to continue with the habit or not. Before coming to that decision Martin tries to imagine his anti-smoking wife with a cigarette in hand, but cannot. Was this a hint for a future story that Richard never completed? Any evidence is long lost, but the conclusion of the story suggests that the author may have had a third story in mind at the time this story was released.

In conclusion a stronger than average story, which this reviewer has no hesitation in recommending.
