Anne's Choice (Richard) - A Review
Part One - The Author
Richard was a smoking fetish author who as far as can be known wrote two stories, both featuring the same characters.(1) From what I can rembember both stories were first posted to Vesperae Lux's now defunct bulletin(sic) board, the first made it to Loring's website, appearing there in February of 2006 and ultimately both were republished as part of the Noble Leaf Library appearing in Volumes 31 and 43.
Part Two - Anne's Choice
Anne's relationship with the habit was uncomplicated, but her new relationship with a non-smoker bought complications and unwelcome revelations. These revelations lead to a hard choice, one which will determine the rest of Anne's life...
Part Three - Comments
The story is structured as eight unnamed chapters and a bipartite epilogue. The choice referred to in the title is 'to smoke or not', or perhaps 'is the pleasure worth the pain'.
The author dipped into the arsenal of the Dark Side Fetish with it's emphasis on the physical effects of the habit as a means of highlighting that the actions of Martin, the boyfriend are driven by concern for the protagonists long term health, not simply reflexive anti-smoking beliefs.
In this the storyline has a similar trajectory to the relationship in Marcus's 2007 story 'Leslie' between the title character and her boyfriend, Boyd.(2) With the title characters devotion to the habit acting as a wedge to drive the characters apart.
The epilogue sets up the sequel, with Martin realizing he has the smoking fetish. Anne's part of the epilogue is an upbeat counterpoint to where she is at stories end, reconciled with the habit and enjoying the attentions of a smoking fetishist in the United States.(3)
Overall a strong story this reviewer has no hesitation in recommending.
Notes:
1. 'Anne's Choice' and 'Anne's Choice 2'. The former is the subject of this review, the latter will be the subject of a later review.
2. This is also the plotline behind the short story 'Rachael's Quit' by SecretEmm, which is reviewed in Volume 22 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Reviews.
3. Nick, the Noble Leaf Librarian identifies this figure as being based (at least physically) on a now deceased member of the smoking fetish community known as Michael C.
