"diamondtourgolf.com" can build you a good set of clubs for a very reasonable price. I purchased a driver from them this year (similiar to the new 350 cc drivers which retail for $400 for less than $100) and it is great. I use a set of clubs purchased from NG when I started, but I agree they are overpriced. For a beginner you want your irons to be 1" longer than standard, 2 degress upright, regular-flex steel shaft. You can purchase grips from NG or from "big-gripgolf.com". Diamond Tour will put them on for you. Next season I plan on ordering a new set of Turner Irons (3-sw), 1" longer than standard, 2 degrees upright, Harrison steel shafts, frequency matched for $240! You can't beat that!
The main two items for playing NG (I prefer to call it Single Axis) the oversize grips and the longer club.
If any questions feel free to contact me.
