It is not necessary to choke down, but, if you are trying to swing like Moe, it can be very helpful in understanding his moves.

If you choke down two inches you will see the butt of club out ofyour hand, and you will start to assimilate the movement of the club as did Moe...you will copy is butt of club movement. There is more to it than this, but this is the simple way to explain it.
