Kevin:

I found myself in much the same position three years ago as you are today, with one exception: I couldn't break 100 to save my life. Also, as someone whose work required extensive travel, I was looking for a relatively low-maintenance way of improving with the ultimate goal of playing bogey golf or better (Good Enough Golf) on a consistent basis.

With Natural Golf, I was able to achieve this goal and now play to a 16 handicap, and broke 80 for the first time (twice) last year. Yes, I occasionally have my bad days, (particularly if I haven't practiced or played for a while - - - no surprise) but my bad days are better (bad for me now is shooting 90 or higher).

I discovered NG when I stumbled across the book, "Natural Golf, Get A Grip On Your Game" by Peter Fox, at the local library. This piqued my interest, which then led me to the original Natural Golf instructional tapes and Golf Digest Natural Golf tape.

Not wanting to make a premature (and costly) investment in clubs for a method that I was not sure was 'for me,' I decided to do some low-risk experimenting on my own first. With NG's guidance, I had an old set of clubs modified for a single-axis swing. I played with these clubs for a season, and my scores came down immediately and steadily. After finishing the year with three consecutive rounds in the high 80's, I decided to take the next step and attend a one-day school in Chicago.

The school was excellent, as was our instructor, Dave Woods. I did not master all of the drills that day at the school, but it quickly became evident that my goal was reachable if I would commit (as they asked us to do) to practicing them daily for a month. This was not easy to do and I missed a couple of days, but I probably made 25 out of 30.

It worked. After that, I finally decided to invest in a set of NG clubs. Could I have continued to play with my modified set and gotten results? Sure. However, I found that I got a much more consistent feel and predictable ball flight with clubs optimized for NG. I've had them for a couple of years and am well-pleased, despite the fact that they are now two or three 'generations' behind (with the exception of a couple of the copper beryllium fairway woods, which I love). Like my game, the clubs are not great, but good enough - - - and certainly better than what I had before.

Is NG for you? That's something you'll have to decide for yourself like I did. My way of deciding was cautious and gradual. Would I have been better off to simply 'take the plunge?' Perhaps, but I cannot say for sure. Maybe you'll get a reply from someone who did this and can share their own experience.

Like many who post to this site, I am sometimes overwhelmed and confused by the ever-changing array of NG clubs, training aids, schools, merchandise, tips, etc. All for a price, of course, but they are a business, and that's what businesses do as they evolve. That's the value of sites like this: you can take what NG says for 'what it's worth,' solicit feedback from others, and then decide for yourself.

Sorry for the long reply, but I thought it was worth it since it sounds like you are close to being in the same place I was when I first got involved with NG.
