All,

I've watched a bunch of Moe Norman video tapes, including the fireside philosophy chat with Jack. I watched the GC show and agree he seemed more agitated than ever - he certainly came across as self-absorbed and defensive about his swing insights on this occasion.

Autism might be the operative word. He may have come to it via the car accident, or more organically, but he sometimes acts like autistic people I've seen documented on television. Whatever or however he came to it, Moe has been able to focus and concentrate on his swing to a very high level. In some golf specific ways he's like the "idiot savant" who can calculate phenomenal mathematical problems in his head, but who cannot extend his awareness into the realm of other people's feelings. Moe said (with conviction) he knows exactly how many golf balls he's hit in his lifetime. And that the most he hit was 2100 in one day. Hello? Dustin Hoffman, are you listening?

This kind of narrow self-absorption of course leads to social awkwardness and a cycle that is destructive in interpersonal terms. Understanding Moe's limitations - and strengths - well, it behooves us to extend some latitude to him. He is a nice man who bristles easily. He also hits the hell out of the ball and I believe he employs superior mechanics with his grip, stance and facing the ball at impact technique. I'll never be like Mike (Jordan), but I can be like Moe.

I laughed when he pinched his nose, but I was sorry he did it too - fodder for the anti-Moe crowd that includes my club's golf pro. The modern pro tour is a joy to watch for any golfer - CG or NG. Tiger Woods plays great golf. But Moe might not even know much about Tiger - his interest is in single-mindedly hitting golf balls every day. At least that is my impression.

We can admire Moe for his achievements - maybe even more so since he accomplished them without developed social skills - and still come to our own conclusions about his take on life and the rest of the golfing world.

Someone told me Moe drinks a can of diet coke a hole when he plays. Maybe it's the Nutrasweet. Yikes.

Dirk
