Todd Graves, who tries to emulate Moe as much as possible, promotes a square stance with the lead foot pointed slightly outward to allow for a slight hip rotation on the follow through.
Going by the train track image in the LOBG I think the idea is to face the ball at impact and stay as parallel to your target line as possible. A wide stance is necessary to stabilize yourself but you shouldn't over-do it. As long as you brace your knees you shouldn't have to spread too wide.

Having said all that though, as long as YOU are comfortable with a certain swing or stance and you get consistent results, that's really all that matters. Personally, I like the way Todd swings, but others might prefer slight alterations (like the one you mention above).
