Rob,

Try Frankel's drill where you use a weight at the end of a string. Have the weighted string in your hand along with the golf club. If you start your swing back with the hands alone the weight won't swing back with the club. Using STC, the weight will swing back with the club. As for the wide stance, depends on if your stance is much over shoulder width it will restrict your turn especially if you're not very flexible. Myself I know if I don't get my left shoulder behind the ball I'm not going to have the power that I should.
