Subject: SB AD search
Anyone have any news on where the SB AD search is headed? Are they trying to bring in someone from a "big-name" program who will attempt to lead them into the "Big Time", and hence, out of AE the way the Northeastern has done with O'Brian?

I think we would have been better off if Shirley Kenny retired along with Sandy Weeden, and Dick Laskowski were left at the helm of the athletic program.
Instead of looking at the Big 10 or the SEC, Kenny would do better to look at some of the proven adminstrators in America East, such as Pat McNett at Hartford, or Thirer at Binghamton. I can't imagine that either of them would consider going to my school for even a minute, given the quagmire that Kenny has helped to create.

Wow. Someone needs to sit the SB athletic staff down and tell them not to air their dirty laundry in the papers. Sounds like growing pains.

They have hired the search firm Eastman and Beaudine to recruit the cnaiddates. Just like Vermont. The president is too pompus to look for a quality applicant, her vanity will only allow her to hire someone from a big time program , even if they are the janitor!

Re: SB AD search -- Josh, 05:29:19 06/04/03 Wed
This is all very disheartening news re SB's situation. Given the financial situation all of the SUNY schools are facing for at least the next few years, I wonder whether anyone there has any sort of vision as to what direction they want their athletic program to take?
From what I've heard about Laskowski, he always had that vision and was a class guy to boot. If he was either forced out, or just disgusted with the internal politics, it was SB's loss either way.
What worries me is that they try bringing in someone to push their football program forward. If they do that it will be at the expense of all of our other teams. On the other hand, perhaps someone over there may think that the only path to a bigger time conference is via football.
It worries me to see AE conference schools who have AD's whose primary focus is on non-conference sports, e.g., the new hires at Vermont and Maine being hired because of their hockey backgrounds. Granted, hockey is very important at those schools (as is football at Maine and UNH), just as it is at New Hampshire which is why they hired Scarano a few years ago.
As for SB (and Albany as well), they should invest their money in basketball, as chasing football will only bleed needed resources away from the rest of their programs. They should take a good look at Buffalo and then learn what not to do. While I like the new football stadium at SB, I think that was Laskowski's biggest mistake during his tenure. I would rather have seen the resources placed elsewhere in order to elevate the rest of our programs. In this regard, I think that Binghamton is the clearest thinker of all four SUNY Centers. Although they have the worst level of funding by far, at least they aren't pouring money down the football hole. Of course they have their own problems over there; lunatic faculty, anarchist students, and very schizophrenic hate or love of their athletic program regardless of how little they spend or how academically sound their program is.
Whatever SB does, I hope they do it reasonably soon.

I agree to a point. Make no bones about it, Laskowski would still be here if the President had any sense.
As for the stadium, while football does play there, the main thrust will be the lacrosse program. Lacrosse is huge in the Northeast and that stadium will heave the program in the top ten in the next four years!

The stadium also is a great venue for High School Playoffs in both football and Lacrosse. Gives SB Campus great Long Island exposure.

SB Men's Lax -- AlbanyObserver, 11:32:54 06/04/03 Wed
Stony Brook's men's lax underachieved big time in 2003. They have some work to do if they expect to be consistently in the top ten nationally.

Hats off to Josh -- that was one of the most thoughtful, cogent posts I've read on this board. Like Seawolf, I agree completely to a point.

Good points about lacrosse and the use of the stadium. Also, it's a good facility for the general location. My only concern was that it was a harbinger for more money going into football.
