Subject: UVM got raw deal on tournament
How could the AD's vote to bring the tournament back to Boston? Great locale, lousy venue, bad parking, mediocre attendance, etc.
UVM has never been givn the opportunity to host the men's tournament. They'll probably be the pre-season favorites next year with Sorentine coming back. They would have great attendance. Reasonable hotels. Gym leaves a lot to be desired, but I doubt that was a factor. With the present mentality of keeping it close by, schools on the periphery such as UVM, Bing, UMBC, or Maine will never get a chance to host, even with better venues, much greater local enthusiasm and ticket sales.
Has the four years at Delaware soured everyones thinking?

Josh - you're exactly right. After this year's fiasco at WBA I think the only reason it's in Boston is convenience. It's very convenient for two of next year's top teams BU and NU. It makes it much tougher on UV. It's convenient for the AE office. It also rewards a school that put no effort into hosting a good tournament this past season.
I don't blame the AE Office for this one, let's put the blame where it belongs with the conference coaches (who you know were in the ears of their AD's) and the AD's themselves. Politics suck!

Re: UVM got raw deal on tournament -- Van Lier, 09:57:37 05/09/03 Fri
Agree with some of your thoughts, especially considering BU's apparent disinterest in running a quality tournament.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but Vermont has only bleachers? If that's the case, there's no way I could watch a two games, much less eight games in three days. In my book, that's all the reason any AD would need to vote negatory.
There is hope for places like Maine, however. If the right people get involved, and I have reason to believe Maine's new AD is motivated, we could see a bid from Portland in the near future.

Maine will never bid on the tournament as long as hockey is in the way. They were a shoo-in for the women's tournament if they wanted it, but, again, obligations to hockey kept them from bidding. They'll always vote for a Boston venue, to keep it close.
By the way, their building is always freezing. (Hockey rink, you know).

Re: UVM got raw deal on tournament -- Van Lier, 11:39:24 05/09/03 Fri
If Maine ever is able to get a bid together (and that's a big if), it wouldn't be for a tournament in Orono, but in southern Maine in Portland.
Hosting the tournament in Orono has about .0000001 percent chance of ever happening. Portland, on the other hand, might have a chance because its an easy (or easier) drive for at least Vermont, UNH (Wildcats travel would be an hour less than Black Bears), Hartford, BU, NU and Albany. Still a haul for Stony, UMBC and Bing, no doubt about that.
Never was trying to compare Alfond to Vermont's gym. Alfond, I'll be the first to admit, is a hockey arena first. But fact is, we draw about 1,500 fans a game and have had a number of crowds in excess of 3,000 over the past four, five years. It's not great, but it's home and with 3,000 fans in there, it's a good home environment. At any rate, all I was saying is that for me — and I realize I'm displaying my age a little — holding a tournament at a site which has no seat backs would be a major drawback. But then again, there are very few fans who go to see the whole tournament anyway. So maybe that shouldn't be a consideration. In my case, however, sitting on bleachers for eight games in three days just is not an option. That's all I was saying.

... everyone outside of BU got a raw deal ... big disappointment ... and the other posts were correct ... suck ass effort to put a quality venue/product together last year for the tournament by BU and the AE admin.

>there are very few fans who go to see the whole tournament anyway.
For that reason, I have to wonder aloud if a one-site tournament is the right thing for America East. I have to wonder if the former format -- each home game at the higher seed -- would be better for ticket sales and revenue of the league.

Re: UVM got raw deal on tournament-Not just VT -- Patch, 21:07:38 05/09/03 Fri
Flat out - After the debacle this year there is "NO WAY" Boston deserves the Tourney. Hartford, Binghamton or Vermont (or whoever) deserved a shot.
Again the responsibility goes to the Coaches and the AD's - politics always rules. What's right always finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th.
I am upset that I have to sit in a proven "stink hole" to watch a tourney in which no one puts any effort forth to make you feel welcome.

Re: UVM got raw deal on tournament -- Cat Fan, 22:19:48 05/10/03 Sat
By not taking Vermont's offer, the AD's turned down around $10,000 just because their coaches are afraid to play there. The UVM Asst. AD, who was at the meeting, was quoted that Vermont was victimized for being too strong at home and too good all together. Something like 20-1 against the AE in the last 21 games.
B.U. won by default. Hartford's money deal was real low and Binghamton could not guarantee their building would be ready and their hotel deal was lousy.
As far as the moron who knocked Jessie Agel. Face the facts-- the guy is the best assistant in the America East and will take over when Brennan retires. He's recruited three rookie of the years since 1998 (Orciari, Coppenrath and Sorrentine), two have been player of the year and another, Sheftic, was tourney MVP. Also a regular season title and an overall championship.
And guys like Frank Martin get touted by some website as being the best assistant in the conference. Get real!

Re: UVM got raw deal on tournament -- Josh, 23:25:20 05/10/03 Sat
I Checked with two different sources close to two of the AD's who attended.
Firstly, all of the 10 AD's were at the meeting and voted, including Farnham from Vermont.
Hartford, Binghamton and Vermont all had bid packages substantially higher than Boston's.
Binghamton did guarantee their building would be ready by the start of basketball season. Also, their hotel prices were as low as Vermont's, and lower than either Hartford or Boston.
How often do you think that Boston has lost on their home court in the past two years? They're just as tough at home as Vermont is.

Re: UVM got raw deal on tournament -- czar, 20:12:40 05/11/03 Sun
First of all, Binhamton guaranteed the most $$$$! Wasn't even close! Nobody wanted to play in Vermonts High School Gym!!! Also, before the AE break-up what was Vermont's record? They sucked! Who was Jessie Agel? A nobody! Still is a nobody! He'll get that job because it's the worst paying job in the AE by far! I heard Jessie could guarantee the best deal at the All YOu Can Eat BUffet! What a great physical specimen! Can you say AB Roller?

Said in the Binghamton paper the vote was 6-4 on the final ballot. But the AD said he was surprised either Boston or Binghamton even made it to the final ballot.

Re: UVM got raw deal on tournament -- lsbal, 22:29:52 05/11/03 Sun
the 6-4 vote was in the 2nd round after Hartford and UVM lost out in the 1st round in a very close vote. The 2nd round was down to BU & BingU.

They don't even belong to the conference yet! Just another example of America East stupidity.

Hey mainejeff, why can't they vote? They are going to be in the conference tourney next year. They should have a say in where it is...
