No east coast teams even BID on hosting a regional, so that's where the analysis should start. There was an article in baseballamerica.com that said the furthest north/east a school to put in a bid was Ohio State.

Would Maine consider putting in a bid even if it didn't get a berth in the tournament?

I was talking with some NU people about using Fenway or Lowell or Pawtucket as the site for a baseball regional, and from what they said, the guarantees coming from the schools in the south are just WAY too high to even consider using a facility in the North.

BC toyed with the idea of hosting a regional at Fenway last year and while BC never made the tournament, the break even numbers for baseball are about 5-6,000 per game for an on campus facility, so you figure if you had to rent a place like Lowell, Pawtucket, or Fenway, you'd need to draw at least double that number.

While I agree the regionalization hurts teams in the northeast, the "purist" fans will argue that the best teams are playing in Omaha.

Don't get me wrong, MJeff, I love college baseball. Growing up in the Midwest, the Big 10 always had super teams with future big leaguers. Now, we might have a star player or two, but the teams just don't compare.

My contention is that when they went to the pure seeding in NCAA basketball, it worked ... in a huge way, obviously. It doesn't work in baseball.

I've lost interest in college baseball because the teams I follow, the Big 10, and Maine used to be regulars in the CWS and, once there, they actually competed well. Good programs with very good players.

Maybe someone will get through this year. But probably not. It takes a lot of the fun out of the CWS. Once again, it works in basketball, but not in baseball.

I'm just not interested in watching Miami, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Florida State, Texas, etc. every year.

In my opinion, the seeding in baseball doesn't work. The programs in the north suffer. Just when interest in the programs should be at its highest, the northern programs are going home or facing almost insurmountable odds.

The path college baseball has chosen leads to apathy which leads to dying programs, which leads to cutting programs. But, like NU Fan says, "The best teams are in Omaha."

No argument here.

Money talks, tradition and interest in the north walks.

I assume baseballamerica.com was referring to schools that made the tourney. Maine submitted a $35,000 bid to host a regional at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.......of course after that announcement was made, the bears proceeded to choke in Burlington. I had a feeling that talk about hosting a regional was a bad omen.

Honestly, if college baseball keeps heading down the current path, I see many programs in the Northeast/Midwest being cut do to budgetary constraints/lack of interest.

Which brings me to another point. Have broad-based sports conferences outlasted their welcome? I think a Northeast baseball league made up of Maine, Northeastern, BC, UConn, UMass, Rutgers, Seton Hall, etc. would do much better in terms of fan interest than the current conference set-ups. This case can be made in other sports too, but basebal really sticks out.

That very question was put to the committee representative on the ESPN baseball selection show. He stated that the committee wants badly to have a regional in the Northeast. To do so, the school that bids as a host has to be ranked high enough in the polls that they would make the tournament whether they win their conference or not. It would be embarrassing for the host school not to be in the field of 64. So the East needs better teams before they can talk about hosting..
