Subject: AE speaks about UMBC
America East Asst. Commissioner Matt Bourque gave an interview to Bangor's WZON-AM620 on Tuesday. He stated that while athletic-minded folk (coaches, et al) look at a school's location when considering entry into a league, university presidents take stronger consideration as to its academic prowess. Like so many that are in America East, UMBC is a state school that emphasizes research. That, and the conference's chance to break into another market, played a big role in the entry into America East, much in a similar fashion as is the CAA is trying to do so in Boston via Northeastern. It also helps that UMBC plays sports that the conference was "dangerously close" to the NCAA minimum for automatic-bid consideration.
Personally, I can't help but feel "blah" about this news. Nothing against the people of UMBC or their reputation, but good lord, they're in MARYLAND. I still think that an athletic conference should have a regional feel, and while the three SUNY schools were new to us, at least they were in the northeast.
Besides, that name is gonna be a mouthful for us PA announcers next year. If the school is in the city of Baltimore, does it really need "County" in its name? I just don't get it. It sounds very Division III in my book.

Amen. can't they just change their name like the SUNYs did? The University of Baltimore sounds much better.

That name is already taken by another school. Heck Jeff, I'd take UMB or even Baltimore State at this point.

I agree with you Bainsey. But before you work on UMBC, maybe you can get Maine residents and the Portland paper to quit calling us UMO????

What will the Portland paper's headline read if UDO leads UMO over UMBC?

The only Maine residents I know that do that never went to UM in the first place (or they graduated between 1970-86). Consider the sources.
When have the Portland newspapers called the school "UMO"? I've never seen that since the name change; you'd think they'd know better.

Conservatively, whenever I hear someone refer to the University of Maine, I'd say it's about 85-15 chance that they call it either UMO, UMaine-Orono.

Just a couple days ago, there was a photo and story of some professor/research department in the Portland Paper (on front page or section front) and both the story and caption referred to University of Maine-Orono as if we need to be told where the University of Maine is located.
It's not a big a deal. I'm just pointing out that most folks in our own state seem to feel the need to use the "directional" for our own flagship university. So, to paraphrase the greatest coach who ever lived, Roy Williams, "I really don't give a flip about UMBC."

What I don't get is why it is so bad to have a team in Maryland compared to a team in Delaware and Philadelphia. The America East conference two years ago had almost as many non-New England schools as it did New England. I think that this is a great addition to the conference.
Also for as much as the AE Office has been blasted on this board, why has no one said how impressed they are with the work on Monasch and crew to a) get UMBC in this year, I had heard there was no way they would come any earlier than two years; and b) that Northeastern as not bolted leaving us in a real quagmire.
For my $0.02 Kudos to the conference office for getting this done

A valid point. However, when the CAA-4 exited and the SUNY 3 entered, the conference had more of a regional feel to it that you just don't see in many conferences anymore. (Don't get me started on Miami and Notre Dame in the Big East or Penn State in the Big Ten.) The addition of a school south of the Mason-Dixon line ruins that feel, as it's such a huge geographical departure from the remainder of the conference.

Another valid point, but I wouldn't count on Northeastern as a definite in the "stay" department. It still could happen, though I'd hate to see it.

Re: AE speaks about UMBC -- NU Hoop Fan, 22:10:33 04/23/03 Wed
You'll hear news about Northeastern's plans this summer. The CAA will decide what's going on once school lets out.
The UMBC doesn't really impact NU all that much. All it means is that there's somewhat, albiet not much less, of an economic cost to switching leagues. They now have to go to Baltimore regardless of the conference affiliation.
