KIRSTEN ZOELLNER TRANSFERS TO UALBANY BASKETBALL PROGRAM
Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany men’s basketball coach Will Brown announced on Tuesday, June 24 that Kirsten Zoellner has transferred into the program. Zoellner, who played the last two years at Boston College, will be eligible for competition in the 2004-05 season.
Zoellner, a 7-foot-1, 280-pound center from Hannover, Germany (IGS-Hannover-Linden), appeared in nine games for Boston College last season. The Eagles, who compete in the Big East Conference, finished 19-12 and reached the NIT Tournament’s second round. Zoellner, who will become the tallest player in the UAlbany program’s history, also played in six games for Boston College as a freshman.
"Kirsten has great size, rebounds well and can challenge shots defensively," Brown commented. "He can be very successful in our conference due to the fact that his size will make a difference on the defensive side of the floor and he can get easy baskets in the low post and off the glass on the offensive end. He comes from a proven program in Boston College and has the experience of practicing against Big East competition for two years."
Zoellner, a three-year member of the TK Hannover club team in Germany, averaged 14.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in the 2000-01 season. His older brother, Klaas, played as a collegian at the University of Akron from 1997-2001.
The Great Danes have added five players to the roster since the fall of 2002. Jamal Hughes, a 6’8" junior college forward/center from Rochester, N.Y., signed a letter of intent during the late recruiting period. Jon Iati, a 5’9" guard from York, Pa., and Todd Martin, a 6’7" forward from Upland, Calif., signed last November. Lucious Jordan, a 6’2" guard from Albany, N.Y., transferred into the program on June 5th. Jordan, who led Loyola, Md. in scoring with a 13.2 average last season, will have two years of eligibility, beginning in 2004-05.
At Colonie Central High School, Jordan earned second-team all-state and first-team all-area honors as a senior, when he averaged 21.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists. He finished his career as the school’s all-time scorer with nearly 2,000 points and was a member of two state championship teams.

Albany would have gotten bigger if they signed two guys who were 6-foot-3.

You got that right! Hell, 5'9" John Iati is an increase in size at the PG position. UA added some size upfront for the coming season with 6'8" Jamaal Hughes and 6'7" Todd Martin but it will be nice to have a HUGE (7' 280) prescence in the middle 2 years from now.

No one knows how this years group will pan out - Iati(5'9"PG), Martin(6'7"F) or Jamaal Hughes(6'8"C) but if the results are anywhere near as good as Jamar Wilson and Levi Levine were this year we are on the right track.
Nobody knows for sure how things will play out Lucious Jordan and/or Zoellner could be busts in 2004/05. If they are as advertised the Great Danes should be in the upper half of the conference and UA Hoops will FINALLY be on a solid foundation.

Where is the czar to tell us that this guy is the next coming of Shaquille O'Neal coming to Albany.

Of course if the kid was going to any of the other nine schools in the league, guaranteed he would be a DII player.

The czar has been quiet lately he must be on vacation.

Who knows but Zoellner might be DII but from what I heard he will help UA a great deal.

He's not Shaq but you don't have to be Shaq to be an effective AE center look at Rowe(Me.),Billings(Bing), Sheftic(VT), Wright(NU), Spencer(SBU)etal.

If Zoellner can plug up the lane, stop teams from getting too mnay second chance hoops and every once in awhile score on a put back UA will be much better in the middle then they were this year with 6'5" and 6'6" players in the two big spots.
