The only spanking I had to give Jack was when he was 9. He had decided not to do a voluntary Summer project without consulting me. If he had, I would have helped him think of a subject and then he would have wanted to go to the Library right away to borrow lots of books about it. But he didn't talk to me and I didn't find out until it was too late to do anything about it.

When he came down for our "talk", I got the impression he thought he had been rather clever, so I made very sure he did not feel clever after he had been spanked.
