Mandarins mate for life they are not known to breed like domestic ducks. I have lost a mate and they will take another but I have never heared of them being good in anything but pairs when they mate. I was even told to make sur tho keep the pairs away from each other to make sure they don't spend all their time trying to out show the other males.
