Subject: When I was about 6-years-old

I was shopping with my mom for back-to-school. We never had much money and we had to get stuff that would last awhile. We went to rummage sales and my grandma taught me something I still use, go to rummage or garage sales where rich people live or contribute. But, on this shopping trip we were at a real store, but it was, I think, Kmart, so nothing very sturdy or costly. However, a chorus of angels sang when I saw a pair of white boots, that zipped up and even had a little heel. The acme of glamour to my eyes. I rarely begged for anything, because we weren't allowed to and it didn't work. But, I couldn't help it. My mom said they would not do well in the snow and I would not get another pair when they fell apart. But, how could vinyl, knee-high, white boots, with a heel, clearly crafted by boot makers to the saints fall apart? I cannot believe to this day that she said yes. Of course, they did fall apart and I wore them until there was no way they could be worn. They disappeared and I suspect given a secret funeral. Now I know how cheaply made and unglamorous they were, but I still remember them and how wonderfully movie star-ish I was sure I looked. I'm certain I was the most stylish 6-year-old in at least a fifty mile radius. It was worth it to wear, if I remember correctly, for most of the winter galoshes that came from my grandma's attic, or a time machine in the attic, made sometime in WWII. Well, Chris I hope you received a birthday gift that made you as happy as my boots made me. Maybe you got las botas blancas even from a lovely senorita. Happy Birthday baby.
