I think part of the eating away is interesting, because it continually gets interpreted through an artist's work. The audience/observer is attracted to an artist who is working through the same things we are. Not everyone can express this in a compelling way, but us people in general are just better at other things. I think of some of the silent men I grew up around, as an adult I learned more why and the trauma involved (military service etc.). But, I remember watching them listening intently to certain music, or reading some books over and over, building things, and so on. To me their value and strength was they were steady, worked, put family first. My grandpa cut wood for the school, so his kids could go to school and cover tuition. Clearly we need these people too and the artists can help by presenting their experiences through art that brings us relief, or knowing we're not alone. IMO. :) Good question that I may not have answered.
