Subject: My final thoughts on booing the hometown team ...

Perhaps I approach Siena games differently then most, but after following the Saints closely, seeing or listening to every game, listening to the coaches show, watching Saints Alive, reading everything I can on the Saints and following this board, I feel like these kids (and coaches) are a part of my life. They're like family in a way. I've come to recognize the personality of each and everyone of the players and coaches, at least the public one. We start following them when their still in college and still talk about them long after their gone. I truly love this team, just as I did last years and every year before that. One of the great things about college basketball is the closeness fans develop with the team and the program. These kids arent professionals.

Beyond any selfish reasons for wanting the Saints to win, I want them to win for themselves. I will always count last years MAAC run among my favorite sports memories, mostly because I was there. I think my favorite part of the night, in retrospect, is seeing the joy on the faces of the players and coaching staff when the trophy was presented. I was actually proud of the group of kids I had seen struggle during the year and struggle to get playing time as underclassman come together to do something special.

So it hurts me to hear people booing this team. It hurts me to have equally rabid fans critizing their play and effort. It hurts me to have negative signs displayed regarding the team and coaching staff.

I am not a super booster of the program, I wont have anything at the MAC named after me anytime soon. Heck, I didnt even go to Siena.

Perhaps my fondness of the players and coaches allows me to overlook poor and ineffective play at times. But guess what, I'm okay with that. I'm a fan, win or lose. Coach Lanier, Prosper and everyone else associated with the program has my unwavering support.

While I certainly dont enjoy the booing or heckling that goes on at times at the Pepsi, I wont begrudge anyone else their right to do so. If you think booing and calling for Coach Lanier's head is included the price of admission, or that it's the way to show your support for the program, go right ahead.

But, it hurts me, I'm sure it hurts a lot of other fans, and you can be damn sure it hurts a bunch of 20 year old kids.
