Subject: PG Recruiting Update

Hoopscribe has an article today (not on line) that focusues on possible PG recruit Torrey Thomas of Trinity Catholic in Stamford, CT, the top-rated team in that state. Thomas plays with Jimmy O'Leary, the nephew of Steve McCoy, who contacted Siena about Thomas. My understanding is that we've seen Thomas on tape and intend to see him play - Seymour was to see him last Friday but the game was canceled because of a storm.

The story mentions only two other names, Japhet McNeil of Christ the King and Kashif Payne of Northfield-Mount Hermon School. We have seen both of these players more than once. I hear there are others being evaluated besides Thomas, but my guess is that the fact that someone who knows the school (and played with a great point guard here) and knows the kid is recommending him to Lanier will give Thomas a leg up on others who are being evaluated. Therefore, I'd venture that these three are at the top of the list right now, but our coaches are continuing to look for the best answer so who's at the top of the list may change.

Payne would have to be persuaded to give up a second year in prep school - he reslassified as a junior only to improve his recruitment, not because of academics, and that may be difficult to accomplish. On the other hand, he was here for the Providence game on an unofficial visit and had to be impressed with the team and the arena, so you never know.

McNeil's recruitment is apparently picking up - he was quoted in the Daily News last week or the week before as intending to cut his list to ten schools soon. Could he be the Donald Copeland of 2003?

THe bottom line is that the staff knows better than we how much we need a PG and they will get a good one, whether it's one of thse three or someone else.
