Subject: Last nights game

Not too many positives to be taken from it ... Austin Andrews played pretty well, especially moving with the ball, Paul Williams had a highlight real block that turned into offense and it was a bit of a relief that Haddix was able to play despite his leg injury. Oh, and you gotta love the rally nuns!!!! Did anyone see the Fairfield bench laughing when the nuns were on the screen?

Saints needed a strong game from Jamal Jackson to help deal with the pressure ... they didnt get it. Fairfield's guards are strong, tough and aggressive. They simply wore the Saints guards down. (both physically and mentally). They pressure the ball from the moment the ball gets into play until they get the ball back. What makes them even more effective is that they have long athletic forwards in Gai and Deng behind them. They are a tough, tough defensive team. Saints needed their experienced players (Prosper and Justin) to step up, but they didnt. In Prospers defense, he was asked to handle the ball against the press, score and rebound on both ends of the floor. For the first 30 minutes he was able to do so, in the last 10 you could tell he was spent.

Saints need to put this game behind them and concentrate on winning the next two games before facing Fairfield again in 10 days. I was happy to read that Coach Lanier was so angered by their play that they were going to practice last night, hopefully this will make them the team playing with "desperation". Saints have a fairly favorable schedule the rest of the way, with 6 home games and 3 of their 5 road games against the bottom 3 teams in the league (thus far).

It looks like both Fairfield and Manhattan have distinquished themselves as being the class of the MAAC this year. I, personally, think its good for the MAAC to have 1 or 2 teams that are particularly strong, instead of the logjam the top has been the last couple of years. While it makes league play exciting to have multiple teams vying for the top, it's always good to have standout teams when looking for national recognition and postseason success.
