Subject: Over the backboard rule?

I forgot to post this after the game...What is the rule for shots that go over the backboard from the back and go in? Jordan made that one shot on Friday night that was called off by the refs.

Didn't Larry Bird make a shot like this that was replayed over and over again some time in the 80's? I would think that if a player took a shot from in bounds and the ball did not hit the back of the backboard, it would count.
