It is refreshing to find a forum which tackles one of the most underrated resource in our country at this stage. In a time where the "education institution" is predominantly used as a tool for securing votes for parliment by those that insist that they have the nation's interest at heart, it is sad to see the decay setting at the lowest of the education level.

Where a child should be enjoying the adventure of learning, thereby setting the tone of what their future will be, I see frustration setting in at such an early age because, the very people who are to be the future of the country are not educated sufficiently. Some teachers (not all) feel it is their right to turn up to classes when they feel like it, and expect to be paid for the full duration of the week.

What of the children who have to be herded like cattle into a compact classroom already filled to capacity.

Maybe it is time to hold the education department accountable for their actions.

I admire the teachers who dedicate their lives to educating children so that they grow up with a healthy outlook in life. The teachers who encourage their students to believe that even if they don't succeed at one level, there is always an alternative available. To those that inspire, I pray that the system keeps turning out gems like you. I had the fortune of going through a system which bred such teachers. I am where I am because of those people and a self belief that nothing was impossible.

I believe that teachers have a major impact on the lives of their students, because they constitue a great part of the young lives they nurture in the early stages of education.

Education is an integral part of life, but the tools used to deliver the education should also be personally accountable for their actions, because ultimately a life turns to crime and the moral decay of society if teachers choose to ignore the problems their students have.

In 2003, let us refocus on the importance of the educating a generation who will contribute to the sustenance of a proud culture and people, not one which will contribute to it's destruction.
