What the Sciientists made in the lab was liquid. It was the molten metal from an arc welder in fact. Beads of molten metal will dance across a colder surface when it strikes it. Theres a few problems with this being the Hookerman lights. A, all the electiricity it would take to produce the number of lights we have seen would have fried all of us. I'm not crispy just yet, I dunno about the rest of the gang. B, we'd have to be in the middle of a serious shift in the Earths crust, enough to feel it.
What they are I dunno. But Science can't explain them either.
