I do remember in the 2008 Democrat and Republican presidential debates, that at least one did briefly ask all the candidates where they stood if a national smoking ban were to be proposed. So sadly to say, it didn't take long for the issue of tobacco to come back, after the 2004 election. And of course, I remember George W. Bush famously opposed FDA regulation of tobaccco. And Barack Obama went on to sign such a FDA regulation bill into law, only like a year(I think 2009? correct me if wrong) after being elected president.
