Are you allowing sufficient time for it to boot? I have a 6500 CC running 8.6, and when I first switched it on, I thought it wasn't working. The start sequence goes as follows:

1) Machine chimes.
2) You can hear the hard disk spin up.
3) The screen remains black for a full 30 seconds - this is what threw me at first.
4) After approx 30 seconds, the green power light flickers.
5) Another 10 seconds elapse, during which time the screen remains black.
6) The desktop appears, and the machine boots.

On the other hand...
I didn't use the machine for over a year, then when I switched it on, the monitor remained dark. I thought it might be the motherboard battery. (Some machines don't put out a video signal when the battery is flat, but I wasn't sure whether the 6500 was one.) Left the machine for another six months, bought a new battery. Thought I'd switch it on before changing the battery - and it worked!. Sod's Law. Now it loses its date whenever it's switched off (reverts to 1956), which indicates a dead PRAM battery. So the 6500 does work with a dead battery. So why wouldn't the monitor on my machine work for a while? Curious.

Good luck

Brendan Rowland
