I'm pretty sure now that those are due to maladjusted convergence. This can be adjusted with the single adjustment screw on the CRT-end PCB.

As far as width of the display, I'm with Stuart on this one - running it at 60Hz might do the trick. And this gives me something to do with the spare 575 and 550 I have here but don't have space for...
