Starting from the CD might work, actually - the CDs are *usually* pretty nice about not caring what Mac they're booting if they're a retail installer. (If you're using the CD that shipped with a specific Mac, that's a whole other can of worms.) If it doesn't work, try using the CD on another Mac to make a Disk Tools disk, and then hack the OS on the Disk Tools disk.

Alternatively, you could install the OS on an external HD hooked up to a real 575 and then hack it and then move the external HD over to the Mystic. That's what I'd do, but then again, I have a 575 sitting next to my "test station" on my workbench, so it's convenient for me :)
