I have a theory. The PCI controllers Apple used during the 6500 era could support 3 slots. The 5500/6500 used interchangeable PCI riser cards with 1 or 2 slots.

My theory is that the 3-slot PCI riser cards commonly found in 2U rackmount server cases will work in 5500/6500 boards, giving them 3 functional PCI slots. The only problem is the placement...these risers would offset the cards half an inch- they'd never fit behind the logic board fence without modifications. And then there's the height limits to contend with. Eh, just an idea.
