Subject: Sonnet comparison

Over a year ago, I bought a 100MHz 601 for LC575 from ebay.
The accelerator carries a piggyback small PCB (I think its
the cache) with a white label "Z-Q605-256K-KIT.C"
"REV. X1 W/0 23444".

Weeks ago. I acquired a LC630 from a local store for further PCC
work. When I disassemble this LC630, I found there is also a
PPC like card sitting on top of the 040 socket. At first sight,
its almost 100% looks like my 100MHz one except with an Apple
label on it.

When I remove it and compare with my 100MHz one, I found that although
they're very similar, they're not 100% equal:

1. The piggyback small PCB carry chips with different number
(that still could be same chips from different manufacturers)
2. Close to the LT1085, there is no jumper for the Apple brand board.

Viewing from the bottom side:

3. All components were soldered for the 100MHz board and the QFP IC is
VLSI-ARM 9642AV by 1993 Apple. The Apple board have a CE sticker
covers the whole chip.
4. Not all the components were populated for the Apple board
There are 8 set of pads for 44pins DIL-FP but only 4 sets
are populated with 341-S0095 to 0098 from Apple, made by Sharp
For the 100MHz board, only 4 set of pads, and they're populated
with same 4 ICs from Apple.
5. Since there are only 4 sets of pad on the 100MHz, there are room
for more circuitry.
And the 100MHz board has a white lable says: "Z-Q605-100-KIT.C"
"REV: X! W/O: 23443"
6. The apple board is etched with
Apple Computer, Inc.
DayStar Digital, Inc.

Anyone has any idea about the boards ? I guess the Apple board was
released a year ahead and should run at lower speed (at what speed ?).
While the later board can run at 100MHz.

The 100MHz board cannot run on a overclocked 575. I saw a 31.334MHz
OSC on the bottom of both board, I guess if we applied the overclock
directly to this crystal (with procedures for PM6100/66), it should
OK. Any comment ?
