Have you checked that the drive has on-board SCSI termination resistors installed? I once had a drive that didn't, and had exactly the same problem. Just behind the 50-way socket should be two (I think) single-in-line packages of about 10 pins each. If there is a row of empty holes in the PCB, that's your problem.

If that is the cause, while you're sourcing the SIL packages (pinch from the old drive?) you may be able to use the CC with a 25-pin SCSI terminator plugged in to the external SCSI port.
