My dad used to use a game paddle (Jokari) but gave it to my uncle (His brother) to use on my younger cousin. It is a family heirloom used by my grand dad on both of them.
That's when my dad started using a belt. Not sure but I think he just thought I had outgrown the paddle and stepped me up to the belt because I was getting older and he wanted to make a stronger and longer impression which it definately does.It also takes longer to heal.
Kids have probably been getting it with a belt for generations and dads seem to find it a reliable weapon of ass destruction. It is also easily available.
