Parental spanking (or "smacking" as UK media insist on calling it) was made illegal in Wales about three years ago.

This was by the legal change of removing "reasonable chastisement" as a defence to a charge of assault.

According to this BBC report, over the last three years there have been 6200 police investigations into parental spanking in Wales. This is a big increase over the 3900 in the equivalent time span before the ban. So lots of people are being investigated by police just because there is now a ban.

But, "no one in Wales had been convicted of common assault or battery on a child in their care since the ban came into force".

365 parents were sent on courses to teach them how to parent without needing to spank. 55 of them didn't complete the course, but there's no mention of anything bad happening to them.

So overall, the spanking ban seems not to have been a big deal.

Probably, there were many thousands more parents in Wales, who do still spank, but haven't been investigated by police anyway.

The article quotes some people in favour of the ban, and some who are still opposed to it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0q59q00w5wo
