Welcome to the forum, Grant. I am Mr Simons. I am a teacher/teaching assistant from the UK. Lucas suggested I introduce myself. He thinks I might be interesting to you, although I am not really sure about that! I am a life long bachelor. I don't have kids of my own, but love caring for other people's.

I have worked with lots of different age groups but currently work with pretty young kids (4-7 year olds). I really love my work but I do sometimes feel a little frustrated that we are not allowed to do very much to punish children when they misbehave. The focus is on positive behaviour strategies, which certainly are important, but I think consequences are useful too. Even making children stand in the corner or giving lines is frowned upon these days. It's all softy softy.

Corporal punishment was abolished in the UK just after I started school in the mid 1980s, so it was never part of my experience (either as a giver or receiver), but my dad certainly remembers being caned! I have always imagined what it would have been like to be a teacher in a school where you could cane boys, or be a boy in such a school.

I was smacked at home of course but not really in the formal way a lot of kids here are. It was pretty heat of the moment. My brother or I would wind our parents up until they lost it with us and started smacking us. I don't think I was abused or anything, but it is not the way I would do it if I had children, or if I were in charge of a boy and had spanking permission.

You seem like a very nice young man. I hope you enjoy your time here. I hope you and your brother manage to stay out of trouble this year and don't earn too many spankings.
