Date Posted: 17:24:02 02/28/26 Sat In reply to: Mr Simons to Justin 's message, "Re: When in Rome..." on 11:43:47 02/28/26 Sat Dear Justin, In my opinion you got a raw deal. I know that Mr. Simons expressed his adult-parental opinion that you won't be late again and so the spanking was beneficial if not outright deserved. I disagree. Parents (and by extension uncles and etc.) ought to make sure that kids know what behaviors are spankable offences before they haul off and deliver one. I was spanked by surprise before when I disobeyed a silly rule that I had ignored in the past with no serious consequences. I complained on the forum here and the outright consensus if not unanimous agreement was that I disobeyed and therefore deserved the spanking. I don't see it that way. Kids don't think like adults and hallelujah for that, but it means that they need to have things explained even if, especially if the parents think it obvious to them. Otherwise to the kid the world seems unpredictable and that's a terrible thing. The single most important thing a parent has to teach their kids is that the world is predictable, that if you do that, then this will happen. Otherwise the kid goes through life in terror that he's going to have something bad happen to him at random as a surprise and there's nothing he can do about it. Your mom tells you to lower the volume of your music. You obey and turn it down (I usually put on my headphones). The next day your mom isn't home so you crank the volume back up. She comes home early, hears the loud music again and spanks you. How in the world are you to suspect that it was against the rules to listen to loud music even when you are home alone? There may very well be a reason for that, the neighbors may complain or your mom may be concerned for your hearing loss, but that needs to be explained explicitly! How do we let adults know that? I haven't a clue. So... sorry you got a surprise spanking. At least it wasn't with the belt. Small consolation, that, I know, but it's all I can come up with. I wonder what Roman kids got/get for doing what Romans do in Rome. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
