I think we all should, because it lets us respect the special situation with our kid friends. We kids call each other by our first names only, or frequently by just our last names without the honorific (just looked that one up in my thesaurus, aren't I erudite? OK, OK, I'll close that applet). This lets you know that you are a friend and not some random old geezer off the street. Otherwise, everybody is all jumbled up. Besides, it makes the adults feel special and that puts them in a better frame of mind to reward us with goodies. What's not to like about that? > I know one kid who calls his parents by their >first name and I think that's weird! I know more than one kid that does that. You're right it is weird. Their parents are OK with that, even weirder! > >Teachers are sir or miss. Other adults are Mr, Mrs or >Miss whatever their second names are. I'm curious - culture question: We here in the US put a period after Mr. and Mrs. when writing. For example, it's Mr. Smith or Mrs. Jones. In the UK it seems that you don't and it's Mr Smyth. Is that right? To me that looks like a typo. Also we here are having a sexist brouhaha about the use of Mrs. Seems that feminists are upset at being subordinate to their husbands when called that. Stupid fight - there are many other sexist attitudes that need addressing that are far more serious and having a hissy fit about a stupid honorific only detracts from that and makes feminists look silly, thus making men even less likely to think of women as equals - just the opposite from the feminists' stated goals. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot! And as to "miss": God forefend! That is relegated to female (excuse me - potential ova producers) children. That means that we can't call teachers Miss Jones. We have to call them Ms. Jones (pronounced "mizz"). Makes me want to call them "Hey you!", which would get me a detention at school and a bare butt paddling at home. >If I am disrepctful then it's a definite trip to the >study for a spanking :( Same here only it's the kitchen for mom and my bedroom for dad. > >I don't think it's a stupid rule Me neither. -Jerry [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
