I agree, Jessica. If a spanking is a) going to punish the child for their wrongdoing and b) deter them from repeating it, then it has to be a painful experience.

The spanking should not be given in anger but formal. So elements such as corner time (before punishment, after punishment or even both), and sending the child to fetch the implement with which they will be punished, are good ideas. I also like to hear a clear and sincere "Thank you" after the child has composed themselves and is properly dressed again.
