As a young man I would visit a children's home where the matron was a great believer in this position. She said she liked the way you could see the child's face as they learned the lesson she was teaching with the back of her trusty hardwood hairbrush. She also said that watching the child's face meant she didn't fall for any playacting, such as fake crying.

She thought it was a very good position to use with children who were getting too big for their boots. As Nikorette says, it "doesn't allow for any modesty, as you lie naked on your back with your legs up and knees apart by your ears". Taking away their modesty like this reminded these children that they were not adults.
