The lecture beforehand is very important, you are correct

Now of course every family is different and having raised four, 2 boys and 2 girls, and am now a grandmother giving (only if asked) parenting advice, I can say the following worked in our home to great effect.

-the lecture beforehand be given with pants and underwear at the ankles, or skirt/dress up if applicable, and the panties at the ankles.
-the parent does the pulling down, it shows they’re the ones in charge by baring the child.
-after the lecture, the child should be sent to get the instrument, I used a heavy wooden spoon after age 10, and bring it back to the parent. This shows the cooperation and acceptance and adds another layer of humbling as they must “waddle” through the house with everything down.
-After the spanking, 20 total minutes of corner time is required, the first 10 minutes facing the corner, everything still down, with the hands behind the back, and then 10 minutes facing the room, hands on top of the head. Again, this is important to humble the one(s) who misbehaved.

I know my methods may not be ideal for every family, but I can attest they worked wonders in our home and I am the proud mother of four responsible, successful young adults.
