I'm quite certain my parents did not at all enjoy giving a spanking. In fact, my mother, who nevertheless believed strongly in spanking, so hated when they were needed that she almost never gave one, and instead resorted to the routine of "wait until your father gets home." I only remember getting maybe three or four real spankings from her (though she was quite capable of giving a resounding warning swat from time to time). I remember during many pre-spanking talks from my dad that he seemed quite sincere when he said he didn't like giving spankings, but it was his duty to help teach me right from wrong. Despite that, he never went easy, and once over his knee the paddle was used quite firmly and vigorously. Thinking back, since the ones I remember best happened in the early 1980's, I'm able to chalk it up not just as acceptable for the time, but also a real conviction that itvwould do more good than harm
And, while I hated every second of it when I got one, to this day I believe my spankings were effective if not a bit more mild than what some other kids got at the time.

To end, I would say that whether or not my parents ever actually enjoyed spanking, they may have enjoyed telling about them. There were more than a few occasions when they openly discussed the topic with other adults (especially extended family or close family friends) who also had kids. If any of the kids were unfortunate enough to be present when it came up, there was usually some brief mention and even details of the most recent spanking or spankings the kid or kids received. While they may not have enjoyed giving a spanking, the parents all cast knowing or approving looks, and even wry-smiles at us to show their happiness that we had recently learned a good lesson. I also recall a time, or two when they shared details of such discussions as a way to warn us. For example, "Your aunt told me that 'Cousin X' got paddled on her/his bare butt yesterday, so don't think you're the only one who still gets it that way."
