My mum was also a talker before and during spankings. The telling off before would seem to go on for ages. Was probably only a couple of minutes, although it didn't feel that way. Then while spanking she would often pause for the kind of questions you mention. I'd have to answer whichever of "yes mum" or "no mum" was required. Definitely didn't want to say the wrong one! Also if I just said "yes" or "no" she would say "yes what" in order to make me address her as mum.

A spanking off my dad was different. Telling off was very quick and nothing said during the spanking. At least it got the spanking over with quicker, I suppose.
