My school years were 1976 to 1988 in the UK. Corporal punishment was finally abolished in 1987, so in theory, I could have been subjected to it for most of my school days. However, neither of my schools used it while I was there, although both had previously.

When it was in use, I'm pretty sure there was no choice involved. However, answering the last question hypothetically, I would have chosen detention in my senior school days but maybe spanking when in junior school.
