In my schooldays the belt was given on the hands, so you HAD to stand there and co-operate, watching the teacher swinging the belt behind their back and then lashing it down towards your palms. Not too bad if you were only getting the one stroke, but if you were on the receiving-end of the dreaded six of the best everything inside you would be urging you to pull your hands out of the firing line - and you had to resist that urge and take it. The only time you risked getting belted on your bottom at my school was if you repeatedly pulled your hands away - when you would be taken into an empty room, given a final chance, and if that didn't work, pushed down over a desk and walloped like that. Empty room, because punishments on the bottom were against local authority rules and the teacher didn't want witnesses - though that didn't stop primary school teachers and PE teachers using the slipper as their weapon of choice. We dreaded the idea of getting the belt on the bottom - in retrospect I'm not quite sure why. Surely there are more nerve endings in your palms than in your buttocks?
