Did your school have corporal punishment? Yes, I attended public school in a rural SE Texas town between 1961 and 1973. The paddle was used, with the maximum of 3 swats (licks) being given at any one time, always over clothes.

If so, did you get a choice between detention or a paddling? Not that I was aware of. I do not think Detention even existed and I do not have any knowledge of parents needing to sign forms given permission for the school to paddle.

Which one did you choose? No choice available.

If not, what would you have chosen? I was paddled 4 times I can remember. The first time in 3rd grade for watching 2 other boys have a fist fight. I got 3 licks. The second time was in the 5th grade for fighting. I got 3 licks for that one. The 3rd time was in either the 7th or 8th grade for not wearing a belt. To the best of my memory, it was just 1 lick for that one. I was paddled once in the 8th grade, in the Field House before football practice for leaving my helment outside my locker by one of the coaches.

I think I would have chosen paddling each time over detention because I do not remember any of these paddles being unbearably painful. Just stung a bit.
