100% this is true Carol. I remember my mom went to a bunch of parenting classes at church all through my sister's childhood (where she was probably the oldest one there). I asked her after I had my daughter why she did that for her youngest and not with my brother and me. She told me there just wasn't such a thing in the 70s and early 80s and that everyone just expected a mom to know everything about parenting and be perfect. She said she really just loved getting to talk to other mothers besides her own mom and sister.

On the subject of my grandma, the role she played probably affected the frequency of spanking in my house. She was pretty much a third parent to me for much of my childhood and was certain that corporal punishment was the most dependable way to correct a child (not hating on the lady, just stating how things were). As my sister got older, my grandma went from someone who helped my mom with day to day things to someone my mom was having to spend increasing amounts of her time taking care of while raising her third child.

And I wouldn't say my sister got away with stuff. I think my parents were still fairly strict with her. She regularly received consequences for things that I would have gotten spanked for, they just varied. If she got spanked, though, it was usually on the more severe side because my dad's belt became reserved for the worst of the worst offenses.
