I think a big part of the reason, we never got spankings over our grades is because my Momma did. Granny expected her and Aunt Connie to make straight A's and would whip their bare butts with a switch for even bringing home a B. Momma's weakest subject was math and she struggled with it. From what she's told me, she got a whippin' nearly every report card day.

My folks didn't pay as much attention to the grades as they did the conduct marks. I never got an F but I did bring home a couple of D's honestly because I wasn't paying attention enough in class and I got a good talking to about it at the worst and was told I could do better than that. If I got a C, I didn't get fussed at, just told I'm smarter than that and they would try to help me if I was struggling in school. Of the three of us, my brother is the only one who ever brought home an F. That was in his Junior year. He had taken an Language Arts class called "Mass Media" thinking it might be an easy grade, but in that class you were expected to listen to two hours of radio including news, two hours of tv also including news and read a newspaper EVERY DAY and be ready to report on it the next day. They wanted to know the top stories on the news programming, sports results and so forth and you were expected to write all this down to be turned in. The teacher even wanted to know about the commercials during that time you were viewing or listening. Ninety percent of the students who took that elective FAILED it. Including my brother. He didn't have any problems with the other three elective courses he took. I avoided that one myself because I heard about it. I took Speed Reading, Creative Writing, Advanced Creative Writing and strangely enough Comic Books as an Art Form class even though I really wasn't into comic books. I did well with all four of those classes. By the time my sister was in High School, Mass Media was removed from the Curriculum because students quit taking it.

On the other hand, There was the "Conduct" section of the report card. I sometimes would get "needs improvement" or "unsatisfactory" marks because I was a chatterbox and got in trouble a LOT for talking and sometimes being tardy because I'd be outside the classroom talking when I was supposed to already be in my desk. Also, I had a bit of a temper and sometimes would go full blown redneck. So I got into more than a few fights at school with different girls and a couple of boys. In addition to getting paddled or detention, that would show up on my conduct under "citizenship" as "unsatisfactory". So unless I had a really good explanation, If I brought home an "NI" or a "U" on the conduct part of the report card, I'd have to make a trip over Momma's knee with my panties down to get a good dose of the hairbrush to motivate me to do better. Unfortunately, sometimes that was about as successful as catching water in a strainer.

So while I didn't get spanked for grades, my behavior at School got me QUITE A FEW trips over Momma's knee. All the way from First Grade to my Senior Year.
